Add, order and assign a product's photos

What you will have: Your products have photos in the right order, and each color shows its own image.

A customer who sees the right item, on the website, at the register or on WhatsApp, hesitates less and asks fewer questions before buying.

Why it matters

A customer buys what they see. A record without a photo, or a blue photo on the red variant, turns into questions on WhatsApp and lost sales. Genuka keeps a gallery per product: the first image serves as the cover everywhere, and each variant can show its own images.

Summary

Photos are managed in the Medias section of the product record ("Add some pictures to your product"). You drop them in, Genuka lightens them before upload, then you arrange them by drag and drop: the first one is the cover. In the variants section, you then assign images to each variant or to a whole option value (for example all "Red" variants).

Before you start

  • products.create permission for a new product, products.update to edit an existing one.
  • The product must be saved for its photos to be saved: dropped images are only stored when you click Save.

Steps: add photos

  1. Open Catalog › Products & Services, then the product record (or create one).
  2. In the Medias section, click the Add media box, or drag your files onto it. You can pick several at once.
  3. Wait for the upload to finish: a banner shows Preparing files... then Uploading... with the file count (for example "2/5 files"), and a small progress bar shows on each image. Do not close the page meanwhile.
  4. Click Save. Right after, a Processing media box may show for a few moments: Genuka prepares the different sizes of the image.

Before upload, each image is reduced to 2,000 pixels on its longest side at most and compressed, so your pages load fast. An iPhone photo (HEIC format) is converted to JPEG automatically.

Steps: choose the main photo and the order

  1. Hover over an image: a handle appears at the top left.
  2. Grab the handle and drag the image to the place you want. On a phone, press and hold before dragging.
  3. Put the photo that should serve as the cover first: it is the one shown in product lists and on online store cards.
  4. Save.

To remove an image, click the cross at the top right of its thumbnail, then save.

Steps: one image per variant

Once images are added in Medias, you can assign them to variants (see "Variants, options and metadata"):

  • Variant by variant: in the variants list, click the image icon to the left of the variant. The window "Select images for this variant" shows the product's images: click those to assign, in the order you want ("The first one is the cover"). A number shows the position of each chosen image. Finish with Done.
  • By option value: click Images by option, then a value (for example "Red") to choose the images of all its variants at once. If those variants had different images, a message warns that your selection will replace them.

Save the product to keep these assignments.

Fields and options

ItemPurpose
MediasThe product's gallery, 50 files at most. The first image is the cover.
A variant's image iconImages specific to this variant; the first is its cover. A "+N" badge shows the number of extra images.
Images by optionAssigns the same images to all variants of an option value.
ThumbnailReplaces Medias for a digital product: the product's display image. The digital product's Source files, on the other hand, are not photos: they are handed to the customer after purchase.

Edge cases and common mistakes

  • "Please wait for media upload to finish before saving": an upload is still running. Wait until all thumbnails are loaded, then save.
  • "You can't add more than 50 files": a product's gallery is limited to 50 files. Remove images before adding others.
  • Empty Images by option: the message "First add images in the Medias section, then assign them here" shows as long as the product has no image.
  • A deleted image also disappears from the variants that used it.
  • Videos: the box also accepts a video, shown like images in the gallery. Only images are reduced and compressed before upload.
  • Importing the photos of a whole catalog: the import file accepts image links (Product Images column, links separated by commas). An unreachable link is ignored without a message (see "Import products").

FAQ

How do I change a product's main photo? Drag the image you want to first position in the Medias section, then save.

How do I show a different photo for each color? Add all the photos in Medias, then use Images by option and click each color to assign its images.

Are my iPhone photos accepted? Yes. HEIC photos are converted to JPEG during upload.

Can the Genuka assistant manage my photos? It can link an existing product image to a variant, and delete an image after your confirmation. Adding new photos is done from the product record.
