Made in Africa : créer des solutions d’IA adaptées à nos réalités

Pourquoi créer des solutions d’IA sur le continent ?

L’intelligence artificielle (IA) transforme déjà le monde : gestion des stocks automatisée, chatbots pour le service client, diagnostics médicaux assistés, reconnaissance faciale et vocale, etc. Mais une réalité s’impose : la majorité de ces solutions sont conçues dans des contextes riches, bien connectés, avec des bases de données occidentales… loin des réalités africaines.

Créer des solutions d’IA "Made in Africa", c’est développer des outils qui prennent réellement en compte nos langues, nos infrastructures, notre culture numérique, notre climat et nos marchés informels. C’est aussi une manière de s’approprier cette technologie pour répondre à nos défis locaux : accès aux services publics, santé, agriculture, éducation, logistique, ou encore inclusion financière.

L’IA ne fonctionne que si elle comprend notre réalité

De nombreuses solutions basées sur l’IA échouent à s’implanter sur le continent faute d’adaptation :

  • Les assistants vocaux ne comprennent pas bien les accents ou les langues africaines.

  • Les outils de reconnaissance d’image n’identifient pas les objets, plantes ou visages africains.

  • Les modèles de scoring bancaire ignorent la réalité des économies informelles.

À l’inverse, des systèmes pensés dès le départ pour l’Afrique peuvent générer une véritable valeur, réduire les coûts, ouvrir de nouveaux marchés et améliorer la vie quotidienne.

Données africaines : le carburant indispensable

L’IA repose sur les données… et celles qui concernent le continent sont souvent peu nombreuses, mal organisées ou biaisées. Développer des solutions locales implique donc de :

  • Collecter intelligemment des données utiles et anonymisées.

  • Numériser les contenus existants (archives, registres, etc).

  • Encourager les partenariats entre acteurs publics et privés pour partager les jeux de données.

Cela demande un travail de fond, mais ouvre des opportunités considérables pour les jeunes entreprises africaines.

Trois types d’IA très utiles pour les TPE/PME

1. L’IA conversationnelle (chatbots locaux)

Utilisée dans un service client WhatsApp ou Facebook, un chatbot peut répondre automatiquement aux questions fréquentes, prendre des commandes ou même suivre des paiements mobile money. Adapté en langues locales (wolof, fon, swahili…), il devient un véritable agent commercial disponible 24h/24.

→ Ex : un restaurant abidjanais a mis en place un chatbot WhatsApp qui traite 60 % des commandes sans intervention humaine.

2. L’IA d’analyse prédictive

Basée sur les ventes passées, les saisons ou les événements, elle permet de mieux gérer les stocks et de prévoir la demande. Utile pour :

  • Les grossistes de denrées alimentaires

  • Les boutiques de mode

  • Les vendeurs en ligne

→ Ex : un commerçant à Cotonou a évité une rupture de stock en décembre grâce à un outil qui prévoit les pics d’activité liés aux fêtes.

3. L’IA de reconnaissance de documents et d’images

Cela permet de :

  • Lire automatiquement les factures ou fiches manuscrites

  • Reconnaitre des produits sur une image prise avec un téléphone

  • Diagnostiquer des cultures malades par photo

→ Ex : une coopérative agricole au Rwanda utilise l’IA pour envoyer automatiquement aux fermiers des recommandations de traitement de cultures en analysant leurs photos.


Mini étude de cas : EWA Tech au Sénégal

EWA Tech est une petite startup de Dakar qui a développé un chatbot intelligent pour les mutuelles de santé communautaires. Objectif : guider les usagers (souvent sans grande maîtrise du français) via WhatsApp dans leur langue locale, pour vérifier leurs droits et recevoir des recommandations de santé.

  • 6 langues intégrées : wolof, pulaar, sérère, etc.

  • +70 % des requêtes traitées automatiquement

  • Temps moyen de traitement réduit de 15 à 2 minutes

  • Économie de 30 % sur les coûts de support client

La clé de leur succès ? Une base de données construite à partir de vraies conversations et une phase de test longue dans différentes zones rurales.


Les défis spécifiques à l’Afrique (et comment les contourner)

Créer une IA locale, c’est aussi naviguer entre obstacles techniques et réalités terrain.

Connectivité Internet

Les modèles IA nécessitent parfois des serveurs puissants et beaucoup de bande passante.

→ Solution : utiliser des systèmes en local (edge computing) ou hybrides (traitement partiellement en ligne), compresser les données, privilégier le texte plutôt que la vidéo.

Faible numérisation des données

Beaucoup d'entreprises fonctionnent avec des carnets, des reçus papier, des appels téléphoniques.

→ Solution : commencer par la reconnaissance OCR (lecture automatique de texte écrit), ou créer des interfaces simplifiées pour entrer les données (fiches, formulaires vocaux).

Problèmes de financement

Développer une IA coûte cher en temps et ressources.

→ Solution : mutualiser les outils à plusieurs entreprises d’un même secteur, participer à des incubateurs, collaborer avec des universités pour tester les concepts.


Checklist : réussir un projet d’IA adapté à l’Afrique

✅ Identifier un vrai problème terrain à résoudre (pas de gadget !) ✅ Parler aux utilisateurs finaux dès le début ✅ Chercher des données locales fiables : collecter, structurer, nettoyer ✅ Choisir des outils simples à mettre en œuvre (chatbot, recommandations, OCR…) ✅ Prévoir des versions offline ou légères en connexion ✅ Tester dans un quartier ou une ville avant de déployer à grande échelle ✅ Mesurer les résultats (temps gagné, erreurs évitées, ventes augmentées…)


Astuce terrain 1 : Utilise la voix là où l'écrit bloque

50 % des utilisateurs au Nigeria ou au Mali préfèrent parler que taper du texte. Développer des interfaces où ils peuvent envoyer une note vocale (traitée automatiquement en texte + réponse vocale) est un levier puissant pour l’inclusion.

Astuce terrain 2 : Commence petit, mais spécifiquement

Vouloir créer “l’IA pour l’agriculture africaine” sera trop large. Mieux vaut cibler : tomates à Bamako, maïs dans la région d’Arusha, ou vaches dans le Centre Cameroun. Les données seront plus pertinentes, les résultats plus visibles.

Astuce terrain 3 : Forme une petite équipe pluridisciplinaire

Une IA utile n’est pas qu’une affaire de technologie. Associe un développeur, un profil métier (vendeur, agronome…), quelqu’un du terrain, et un expert en données. Ce mélange donne de bien meilleurs résultats qu’un projet piloté uniquement par des ingénieurs.
